Commentary:
A new producer adds more of the younger comedian to the mix, with Stephen Fry and Tony Hawks both setting off on long careers with JAM. Again the regulars dominate but Paul Merton is now at his best and the show is sparking. For the first time the show is recorded outside central London with a trip to Highgate for the 25th anniversary recording. To celebrate 25 years on air, the BBC released Silver Minutes, two hours of material. The first two parts introduced by Nicholas Parsons were a variety of clips, the last two, for sale only, featured clips of the gang of four edited together as if each was a single show. Actually they are rounds from a variety of shows in the 70s and 80s. It's possible to be critical of the clips selected, but the compilations do show off the gang of four brilliantly well while acting as a taster for the new stars Wendy Richard, and in particular Paul Merton. Clips of some of the guests are also well chosen and all in all, a very satisfactory product is brought together.
