Commentary:
The BBC almost cancelled JAM after Kenneth's death, only agreeing to record more when it became possible someone else would do so instead. The decision was taken not to replace Kenneth and as a result, the three remaining "gangsters" are mixed in with old hand Barry Cryer and the two discoveries of the previous season, Wendy Richard and Richard Murdoch. However in the long-term it was the season's only debutant who was the replacement for Kenneth. Paul Merton, whose first show recorded actually appeared second, shows in the last show of the season flashes of the genius he was to become. Some say these are some of JAM's best shows and certainly one feels the regulars trying harder in Kenneth's absence. Also the last season for which Ian Messiter blew the whistle.
